28TH GIABA TECHNICAL COMMISSION/PLENARY MEETING ENDS IN NIGERIA

The Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) held its 28th Technical Commission/Plenary at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja, Nigeria, from the 13th to 17th November 2017. About 200 delegates drawn from GIABA member States, central banks, technical and financial partners and development partners attended the meeting.

 

The GIABA Plenary is an assembly of experts, including representatives of member States (MS), development partners and observers in the fight against money laundering (ML) and terrorist financing (TF), who meet twice yearly to share their experiences with respect to the challenges they face in implementing effective Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter Financing of Terrorism (CFT) measures. Plenary meetings are GIABA Statutory meetings, thus an integral part of efforts to ensure MS’ compliance with AML/CFT Standards and to foster regional peace, security, prosperity and integration in the ECOWAS region

Also participating at the meeting was a high-level delegation from the Government of Nigeria, led by Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives. Others in the government delegation were Dr. Mahmoud Isa-Dutse, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Finance representing the Honorable Minister of Finance, Ms. Kemi Adeosun, Special Assistant to the Minister, Barrister Sylvester Imhanobi, who represented the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN), Barrister Francis Usani, the Director of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit who is also the National Correspondent for GIABA in Nigeria, and a host of other delegates.

The 28th Plenary Meeting was declared open by Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, Speaker of the Federal House of Representative of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the keynote address delivered by Abubakar Malami (SAN), Honorable Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Also during the meetings, the Activity Report of GIABA was presented by the Director General, Mr. Adama Coulibaly. In addition, the Status Report on Burkina Faso and Status Report on Nigeria’s Membership of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) was discussed the Plenary.

The Plenary ended on Friday 17th November 2017.
